Weaving Communities, Transforming Lives: an ASEAN story

Author:Hong Xinyi

Abstract

Once upon a time, traditional textiles told the story of Southeast Asia. The art of weaving was intimately intertwined with history, culture and social life, and in particular, with women's lives. But today, this common thread that binds communities to the past and to one another across the region is in danger of being broken.

The Maybank Women Eco-Weavers programme, launched in 2016 by the Maybank Foundation, celebrates and preserves the tradition of handwoven textiles. Working with local partners in ASEAN countries, its initiatives have not only breathed new life into their shared heritage, but have also empowered women to build better lives for themselves and their families.

Weaving Communities, Transforming Lives traces the journey of this remarkable programme, and tells the stories of the people who are sustaining centuries-old traditions into the future, one thread at a time.
