The Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan welcomed H.E. Mr. Nicos Panayi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cyprus to Indonesia during the presentation of his Letter of Credence. Ambassador Panayi expressed his gratitude to ASEAN and its Member States for accepting him as the first Ambassador of Cyprus to ASEAN.

In his conversation with Dr. Surin, Ambassador Panayi gave a briefing on Cyprus’ priority as the President of the Council of the European Union, with the theme of “Towards a Better Europe”.

Dr. Surin congratulated Cyprus for assuming the Presidency of the EU Council and noted EU as the major trading partner of ASEAN. He also encouraged Europe to reintegrate itself into the region. The two also discussed political and economic developments in the region.

Ambassador Panayi, who is concurrently the Ambassador of Cyprus to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brunei Darussalam, expressed readiness to working closely with ASEAN in enhancing the relations with Cyprus and the European Union. He said that his accreditation reflected Cyprus’ high interest to cooperate closely with the region.
