The Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs, H.E. Nararya S. Soeprapto, delivered his opening remarks at the 1st Regional Policy Convening of the AI Opportunity Forum, an initiative by the ASEAN Foundation supported by Google. In his address, he highlighted ASEAN initiatives to harness the vital role of digital transformation as a key driver of ASEAN’s competitiveness and future readiness in a region of 480 million active internet users, with 80% of whom are digital consumers. In this regard, he underscored the importance of building a robust digital talent ecosystem to position ASEAN as an emerging global innovation hub. At the same time, he underscored the importance of strong governance and ethical guidelines to ensure AI aligns with societal values and goals.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. ASEAN organs always strive to achieve ASEAN’s goals and objectives, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat shall be functioned as coordinating Secretariat to help facilitate effective decision-making withing and amongst ASEAN bodies. In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat
