Jakarta, 12 April 2019 – The European Union (EU) extended its Support to Higher Education in ASEAN Region (EU SHARE) programme until October this year.

With the extension, EU SHARE will continue its comprehensive approach in engaging with ASEAN and relevant higher education institutions in the region in support of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025, the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Higher Education, and the ASEAN Work Plan on Education 2016-2020. The programme will advance efforts in establishing a common higher education space in the region through strengthened collaborations with ASEAN bodies and institutions. Further, it will develop activities that will build ownership and sustainability for the gains from EU SHARE.

“The EU SHARE Programme directly contributes to the ASEAN Work Plan on Education 2016-2020, particularly in fostering the creation of a common higher education space in ASEAN,’’ said ASEAN Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi. “Its extension would provide the needed support in terms of capacity-building and knowledge sharing, scholarships and mobility students, and for ASEAN to put in place the requisites of a common higher education space crucial for deeper ASEAN integration.”

“The EU is proud to contribute to ASEAN’s vision of building a people-centred ASEAN Community in the higher education area,” said EU Ambassador to ASEAN Francisco Fontan. “EU-SHARE supports people-to-people connectivity and creates lasting benefits through harmonisation of the higher education space across ASEAN.”

Over the last four years, the programme has implemented a broad range of activities in support of the development of a common ASEAN higher education space. Through EU SHARE’s coordinated approach in supporting the goal, the programme has succeeded in enhancing the quality and internationalisation of both ASEAN higher education institutions and its students, such as through its intra-ASEAN and ASEAN-EU scholarships.

ABOUT EU SHARE

The EU SHARE programme is co-funded by the EU. ASEAN and EU have jointly designed the programme to support ASEAN’s vision to build a common ASEAN higher education space, strengthen regional cooperation, enhance the quality, competitiveness and internationalisation of ASEAN higher education institutions and students, and thereby contribute to a people-centred ASEAN Community. On this journey, EU SHARE provides ASEAN with relevant experience and expertise from the European Higher Education Sector; and builds on best practices and existing platforms of the ASEAN region and its Member States.
