ASEAN and its partners are continuing to attract global attention, simply because we are increasingly playing an important role on the global economy, said Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN.
“Together, 18 East Asia Summit participating countries accounted for around one-half of the world GDP. And we have consistently delivered steady, healthy growth. We are the center of global attention due to the growing significance of the region,” he pointed out to the participants oif the meetings here in Siem Reap.
Economic Ministers from of East Asia Summit (EAS) participating countries – the ten ASEAN Member States, plus Australia, China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and New Zealand, the Russian Federation (Russia) and the United States of America (US) – had gathered in Siem Reap, Cambodia, for the First EAS Economic Ministers’ Meeting.
The Ministers exchanged views on the current global and regional developments. They also discussed potential cooperation and developments under the East Asia Summit (EAS) framework.

ASEAN organs always strive to achieve ASEAN’s goals and objectives, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat shall be functioned as coordinating Secretariat to help facilitate effective decision-making withing and amongst ASEAN bodies. In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat

ASEAN shall develop friendly relations and mutually beneficial dialogues, cooperation and partnerships with countries and sub-regional, regional and international organisations and institutions. This includes external partners, ASEAN entities, human rights bodies, non-ASEAN Member States Ambassadors to ASEAN, ASEAN committees in third countries and international organisations, as well as international / regional organisations.
