HANOI, 10 December 2020 – The General Statistics Office of Viet Nam, in collaboration with ASEANstats, and supported by ASEAN Regional Integration Support from the EU (ARISE) Plus, convened the High Level Forum on the ASEAN Community Statistical System (ACSS) and National Statistical System of Viet Nam today.
Viet Nam’s Vice Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Quoc Phuong, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Corporate and Community Affairs Michael Tene, and Ambassador of the European Union to ASEAN Igor Driesmans opened the Forum with their remarks.
The ACSS Committee, along with its Sub-Committee on Planning and Coordination, and working groups, as well as representatives from relevant ministries/agencies in Viet Nam, international organisations, development partners, universities and the media, took part in the event.
The forum highlighted the progress and achievements of statistical cooperation work in the region since its establishment in 2011 and aimed to enhance the visibility of ASEAN statistical community, both on the regional and national levels.
It brought together users and producers of statistics to exchange ideas on their respective challenges and expectations. Furthermore, the forum is expected to contribute to strengthening of inter-agency cooperation and coordination for the development of statistics in the region.
The first session focused on regional statistical production with a presentation of ACSS’s achievements over a decade of cooperation; strategies to strengthen inter-agency coordination and cooperation by showcasing Thailand’s experience; and Viet Nam’s integration into ASEAN statistical community since 1997 and its participation in the ASEAN-Help-ASEAN program
The second session highlighted the use of ASEAN statistics. It featured presentations on the State Bank of Viet Nam’s statistical activities in the field of international investment, as well as the press’ expectations in recognising the crucial role of good quality statistics towards achieving the targets of sustainable development goals. The academic and research community’s use of statistics, and the statistical activities of the General Department of Viet Nam Customs in the field of international merchandise trade statistics were also presented.
Recent statistical developments in ASEAN Member States through videographics from Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Viet Nam, showed how Member States have adjusted their statistical business processes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

ASEAN organs always strive to achieve ASEAN’s goals and objectives, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat shall be functioned as coordinating Secretariat to help facilitate effective decision-making withing and amongst ASEAN bodies. In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat

ASEAN shall develop friendly relations and mutually beneficial dialogues, cooperation and partnerships with countries and sub-regional, regional and international organisations and institutions. This includes external partners, ASEAN entities, human rights bodies, non-ASEAN Member States Ambassadors to ASEAN, ASEAN committees in third countries and international organisations, as well as international / regional organisations.

The ASEAN Community, anchored on three community pillars: Political-Security Community, Economic Community, Socio-Cultural Community was launched in 2015.
