JAKARTA, 25 November 2015 – H.E. Motoo Hayashi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN at the ASEAN Secretariat yesterday.

Secretary-General Minh welcomed Minister Hayashi and his delegation and expressed appreciation to Japan for its support toward ASEAN and the implementation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) Blueprint 2015.

Further, Secretary-General Minh informed Minister Hayashi that ASEAN successfully held the 27th ASEAN Summit and related Meetings last week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in which ASEAN Leaders declared the establishment of the ASEAN Community. He added that ASEAN Leaders have adopted the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 to guide the Community’s integration process over the next 10 years. In this connection, he highlighted that the continuous support from Japan toward ASEAN contributes to ASEAN’s success and achievements.

Minister Hayashi praised the efforts and achievements made in AEC building. He reiterated Japan’s strong interest to further intensify its relations with ASEAN and the ASEAN Member States especially in economic cooperation. He also reaffirmed Japan’s readiness to continue providing strong support to ASEAN’s economic integration.

Secretary-General Minh and Minister Hayashi stressed the significance of the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP) in deepening further economic integration between the two sides. They also shared the importance of concluding negotiations on investment following the conclusion of trade in services negotiations in order to realise the commitment set by ASEAN and Japan Leaders to double trade and investment flows by 2022.

Finally, they also exchanged views on other regional issues of common interest, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) development in ASEAN, the negotiations of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the conclusion of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations and the role of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) in supporting ASEAN integration.
