- ASEAN Member States (AMS) and China met virtually on 13 September 2021 for the Twentieth AEM-MOFCOM Consultations. The Consultations were co-chaired by H.E. Dato Dr. Amin Liew Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II, Brunei Darussalam and H.E. Mr. Wang Wentao, Minister of Commerce of China.
- The Meeting noted that total merchandise trade between ASEAN and China reached US$ 516.9 billion in 2020, registering an increase of 1.8% year-on-year despite the challenging trade environment brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. For 2020, China maintained the pole position as ASEAN’s largest trading partner. Meanwhile, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows from China to ASEAN amounted to US$ 7.6 billion in 2020, amounting to 5.5 per cent of ASEAN’s total FDI, placing China as the fourth largest source of FDI among ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners.
