VIENTIANE, 6 September 2016 – Lao PDR today deposited its Instrument of Ratification for the Protocol to the ASEAN Charter on Dispute Settlement Mechanisms to H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN. The handover took place during the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits currently taking place in Vientiane. Lao PDR is the sixth ASEAN Member State to deposit their Instrument of Ratification after Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam.
The Protocol to the ASEAN Charter on Dispute Settlement Mechanisms covers disputes concerning the interpretation or application of the ASEAN Charter and other ASEAN instruments. Together with the existing ASEAN instruments such as the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) and the ASEAN Protocol on Enhanced Dispute Settlement Mechanism, the protocol aims to achieve peaceful settlement of disputes, strengthening a rules-based ASEAN.
The Dispute Settlement Mechanisms Protocol will enter into force after ratification by all ASEAN Member States.
