MTV EXIT National Anti-trafficking Roadshows Held Across Three Provinces in Indonesia: Pontianak, Lombok, and Sukabumi
MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) celebrates the final installment of the Indonesia Roadshows, a series of events aiming to build the capacity of youth leaders to execute their own human trafficking awareness campaigns throughout the country. In partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the final stop on the MTV EXIT Indonesia Roadshows tour will be held in Sukabumi.
The MTV EXIT Roadshow in Sukabumi will kick-off on 16 January with two days of human trafficking awareness and creative workshops for 20 local youth leaders ages 18-25. The objective of the training sessions is to further the understanding of this devastating crime among young people while building their confidence and skills to share important safe migration messages with their peers and communities. The MTV EXIT youth participants will work with local creative group Bumi Kreativ to develop their own dramatic performance about human trafficking, which they will perform live at upcoming public events and on local radio stations.
The Indonesia Roadshows follow on the success of the MTV EXIT Live in Bandung concert held in September 2012, which led to 25,000 Indonesian music fans joining the movement to end exploitation and human trafficking.
In a unique peer-to-peer learning opportunity, an MTV EXIT training session has been designed by MTV EXIT-trained, youth-led non-profit FIGHT BDG (From Indonesia aGainst Human Trafficking) from Bandung, who will play a key role in delivering guidance and inspiring the youth of Sukabumi.
On 18 January, MTV EXIT Roadshows partner IOM will host a School Forum at Al Masturiyah Foundation Meeting Hall in collaboration with the Sukabumi Regency and support from the United States Department of State (JTIP) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP). The event will bring together approximately 1,000 students from across Sukabumi, 100 sub-district representatives and village leaders, and 20 border control and police officials to learn how they can take complementary actions to prevent human trafficking and exploitation in Indonesia. The event will feature remarks by representatives from the IOM, the Al Masthuriyah Foundation and the Government of Sukabumi Regency along with drama performances by the MTV EXIT youth participants, and a screening of the documentary Enslaved: An MTV EXIT Special.
The documentary gives audiences a real-life perspective into this critical social problem affecting 2.5 million people, more than half of which are from Asia and the Pacific. MTV EXIT Celebrity Ambassador to Indonesia and host of Enslaved: An MTV EXIT Special, Dian Sastrowardoyo, connects these experiences to the audience, shares information about how Indonesians can protect themselves and their families from being trafficked, and highlights what everyone can do to help end this devastating crime.
On 19 January, the MTV EXIT youth participants will conduct their own school event at SMA 5in accordance with local NGO partner Serikat Buruh Migran Indonesia (SBMI) inviting 300 youth aged 15-18 from surrounding schools. This event will feature a live performance of the drama as well as a screening of ENSLAVED, games and prize giveaways, all activities organized and led by the youth themselves. This is a key facet of MTV EXIT youth engagement programs; to empower and equip youth with the knowledge and the skills to raise awareness of human trafficking independently and create a network of youth activists across Indonesia and the Asia Pacific committed to ending human trafficking.
Following the school screening event, the team will visit four local radio stations. These Radio shows will feature a Talk Back section where MTV EXIT youth discuss human trafficking with local NGO partners & local creative. There will also be a special broadcast of their human trafficking drama adapted for radio.
The MTV EXIT Indonesia Roadshows aim to support the ongoing counter-human trafficking efforts of the Government of Indonesia (The National Task Force to Prevent and Address the Criminal Act of Trafficking in Persons), and are produced in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Serikat Buruh Migran Indonesia DPC Sukabumi, CIMW, LENSA and the Government of Sukabumi Regency, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Australian Government’s Agency for International Development (AusAID), Walk Free: the movement to end modern slavery (WF) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) campaign is an award-winning multimedia initiative to raise awareness and increase prevention of human trafficking and exploitation. Human Trafficking is defined by the United Nations as “the recruitment, transportation, and receipt of a person for sexual or economical exploitation by force, fraud, coercion, or deception” in order to make a profit. The UN estimates that at any one time there are 2.5 million trafficked victims in the world, with the majority of these victims in Asia and the Pacific. It is the second-largest illegal trade after drugs, with criminal traffickers earning over US$10 billion every year through the buying and selling of human beings. Often, victims are young men and women – the MTV demographic – who are guilty only of wanting a better life.
MTV EXIT Foundation
Launched in 2003, the MTV EXIT Foundation is a UK-based charity (Reg. No. 1103267) whose overarching aim is to utilize and maximize the power of MTV’s network to educate youth and adults on critical social and human rights issues. The Foundation produces multimedia programming and events aimed at raising awareness and influencing attitudes and behaviors on key issues, as well as inspiring young people to take action.
