JAKARTA, 8 May 2015 – H.E. Suh Jeong In, the new Ambassador of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to ASEAN, today presented his Letter of Credence to H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN, at the ASEAN Secretariat. H.E. Suh is the second Ambassador of ROK accredited to ASEAN since the ROK established its Mission to ASEAN in 2012.
Secretary-General Minh congratulated Ambassador Suh on his assumption of duty and expressed pleasure with the strong momentum of ASEAN-ROK Dialogue Relations that have rapidly expanded in recent years, particularly since the establishment of ASEAN-ROK Strategic Partnership in 2010. He recalled the commitment of the Leaders at the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit last December to further strengthen and deepen the partnership. He expressed appreciation for the ROK’s consistent support to ASEAN Community-building efforts and looked forward to its continued support for ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision.
Ambassador Suh thanked Secretary-General Minh and looked forward to working closely with ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat to further strengthen the ASEAN-ROK partnership. He reaffirmed the ROK’s commitment to support ASEAN’s Community-building efforts by 2015 and beyond. He emphasised the need for both sides to effectively follow-up on the deliverables of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit, particularly on strengthening two-way trade and investment, enhancing political-security dialogue and cooperation, promoting friendship and mutual understanding, and jointly addressing international and transboundary challenges. He also expressed the ROK’s keen interest to enhance collaboration with ASEAN in regional frameworks such as the ASEAN Plus Three and the East Asia Summit.
Secretary-General Minh and Ambassador Suh exchanged views on regional issues of common interest and concern. They shared the view that both sides need to effectively implement the new ASEAN-ROK Plan of Action (2016-2020) upon its adoption in August 2015. The new POA is aimed at tapping the full potentials of ASEAN-ROK cooperation and bringing the Strategic Partnership to new heights.
