Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy to ASEAN, H.E. Mr. Federico Failla, yesterday presented his Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan.

Ambassador Failla, reiterated that as the new Ambassador of Italy to ASEAN, said he would personally guarantee for the participation of his Foreign Minister in the forthcoming 19th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) to be held on 26-27 April 2012 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam. Ambassador Failla also presented an invitation to Secretary-General Surin to attend a forum on ASEAN Awareness in Rome on 22 March 2012 and looked forward to his personal participation in the forum.

Dr Surin welcomed Ambassador Failla and urged the European side to revisit the ASEAN-EU Free Trade Area (FTA)—in light of the fact that the obstacle of this FTA negotiation moving forward, Myanmar, has adopted very significant changes which had improved the country’s political situation.

The Secretary-General also encouraged non-ASEAN Ambassadors to ASEAN to hold exhibitions in the Hibiscus Hall to promote awareness of the relations between the two sides and expressed his and ASEAN Secretariat’s dedication to working closely him to further enhancing the relationship between ASEAN and Italy.
