Sports

Overview

Across ASEAN region, sports have ancient roots and remarkable legacies that crosses time, age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion and nationality. More than as a mean to a healthy body and mind, sports promotes the values of respect, inclusion, fairness and unity

Sports is also used as a tool to promote ASEAN awareness and to foster the sense of ASEAN Community. Mutually beneficial sports exchange programmes and sporting activities are also promoting mutual understanding and friendship in the region.  ASEAN leaders hope to harness the power of sports to be an enabler of sustainable development as well as a tool for peace and social cohesion.

Priority Areas of Cooperation

Traditional sports and games in the region are the very essesnce of ASEAN’s diverse cultural legacy.  Sporting activities held during ASEAN Day are not only bringing ASEAN communities together in the spirit of sportsmanship but also showcasing the cultural diversity that makes ASEAN what it is today.

Cooperation in the sports sector focuses on skills development programmes targeting coaches and sports officials; workshops and trainings in sports management; development of leadership skills amongst ASEAN youth leaders to enable them to advocate for healthy lifestyles and prevent youth crime as well as promotion of increased participation of women and girls in sports.

In line with global and regional developments in the sporting landscape, ASEAN is exploring the potential of sports to contribute to the development goals and regional peace.  Values associated with sports promote community integration and peace through closer interaction among the ASEAN peoples. Sports can also foster a sense of solidarity and develop integrity, as well as leadership and life skills among the youth of ASEAN. For the period 2021-2025, ASEAN will focus on promoting sports for development and peace, sports integrity, sports for all, sport science, sports tourism, and sports industry.

Major Sectoral Bodies/Committees

ASEAN Member States undertake cooperation in sports through the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS), established through the endorsement of the 18th ASEAN Summit held on 7-8 May 2011 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Sports (SOMS) assists the AMMS in the operationalisation of regional sports cooperation based on the ASEAN Work Plan on Sports. To support further development of sports in ASEAN, in 2017, the AMMS established a mechanism for cooperation with Japan through the AMMS+Japan and SOMS+Japan.
