Priority Areas of Cooperation

Traditional sports and games in the region are the very essesnce of ASEAN’s diverse cultural legacy.  Sporting activities held during ASEAN Day are not only bringing ASEAN communities together in the spirit of sportsmanship but also showcasing the cultural diversity that makes ASEAN what it is today.

Cooperation in the sports sector focuses on skills development programmes targeting coaches and sports officials; workshops and trainings in sports management; development of leadership skills amongst ASEAN youth leaders to enable them to advocate for healthy lifestyles and prevent youth crime as well as promotion of increased participation of women and girls in sports.

In line with global and regional developments in the sporting landscape, ASEAN is exploring the potential of sports to contribute to the development goals and regional peace.  Values associated with sports promote community integration and peace through closer interaction among the ASEAN peoples. Sports can also foster a sense of solidarity and develop integrity, as well as leadership and life skills among the youth of ASEAN. For the period 2021-2025, ASEAN will focus on promoting sports for development and peace, sports integrity, sports for all, sport science, sports tourism, and sports industry.
