The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) convened its 29th Meeting from 12 to 15 May 2019 at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta. The Meeting was chaired by H.E. Prof. Amara Pongsapich, Representative of Thailand to the AICHR.
The AICHR held its annual meeting with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, who was represented by the Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN, H.E. Hoang Anh Tuan and discussed key priorities of the AICHR in 2019 in mainstreaming human rights in all three pillars of ASEAN in order to contribute to the vision of a people-oriented, people-centred ASEAN Community.
The Meeting also held its annual meeting with the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) where both parties exchanged views on strengthening cooperation and enhancing ASEAN agenda in the promotion and protection of human rights in line with ASEAN’s principles.
During the Meeting, the AICHR discussed various thematic issues in implementation of the AICHR Priority Programmes/Activities, as well as institutional matters towards strengthening the AICHR’s cooperation with ASEAN sectoral bodies and entities.
In cooperation with ASEAN’s Dialogue Partners, the AICHR met with Australia, the United States, and the European Union to discuss potential areas for future cooperation on human rights themes of mutual interest. The Meeting also received the delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for a briefing on its work in the region.
The Meeting expressed its appreciation to the ASEAN Secretariat for the excellent arrangements of the meeting. The AICHR will convene its next meeting in July 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand.
