Representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the Asia-Pacific region are participating in the “ASEAN Regional NGO Consultation on Regional Follow-Up on Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Treatment, Care and Support” at the ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta from 9 – 10 May, 2006.  The participants comprise the Coalition of Asia Pacific Regional Networks on HIV/AIDS whose main goal is strengthening marginalised and affected communities to respond to the epidemic of HIV/AIDS.

The meeting with civil society or NGOs is part of a series of consultations being conducted by the ASEAN Secretariat’s Human Development Unit (HDU) to develop consensus on the Third ASEAN Work Plan for HIV and AIDS (AWPIII) which will be presented during the forthcoming 12th ASEAN Leaders’ Summit scheduled in Cebu, Philippines in December 2006.

A special session on HIV and AIDS has been included in the Summit’s Agenda,  signifying the high level of concern among the region’s top policy-makers in solving and mitigating this problem that, according to UNAIDS estimates in 2004,  affects 1.5 million people in the ASEAN region.

The NGOs participating in the ASEAN consultative meeting include AIDS Society in Asia and the Pacific (ASAP); Asia Pacific Council of AIDS Service Organizations (APCASO); Asia Pacific Network of PWLHA (APN+); Asia Pacific Rainbow (APR); Asia Harm Reduction Network (AHRN); and Asia Pacific Network of Sex Workers (APNSW).  The other participants are UNAIDS and ASEAN Secretariat officials.
