| On Monday, 27 March 2006, letters of exchange (LoE) to establish the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) were signed in Tokyo between H.E. Mr. Taro Aso, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Datuk Marzuki Mohammad Noor, Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan. The Malaysian Ambassador was signing on behalf of ASEAN as Malaysia currently serves as ASEAN’s Country Coordinator for ASEAN-Japan dialogue relations.The signing ceremony was attended by all ASEAN Ambassadors based in Japan as well as Japanese foreign ministry officials.The JAIF has been established to support ASEAN’s integration efforts towards the realisation of the ASEAN Community, as envisaged in the Declaration of ASEAN Concord II of 2003 (commonly referred to as the Bali Concord II). The funds will be utilised to implement activities of the Vientiane Action Programme (VAP) and promote greater cooperation between ASEAN and Japan.The establishment of the JAIF is a follow-up to the Joint Statement of the Ninth ASEAN-Japan Summit that was held in December 2005 in Kuala Lumpur in which Japan had announced that it would provide financial assistance to ASEAN amounting to 7.5 billion Yen (approximately USD 70 million) to support ASEAN’s integration programme._______________________The ASEAN Secretariat 28 March 2006Click here for the letters of exchangeClick here for the Guidelines for the Projects of the Mekong River Commission |
- ABOUT ASEANThe Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined ASEAN on 7 January 1984, followed by Viet Nam on 28 July 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar on 23 July 1997, and Cambodia on 30 April 1999, making up what is today the ten Member States of ASEAN.Menu

ASEAN organs always strive to achieve ASEAN’s goals and objectives, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat shall be functioned as coordinating Secretariat to help facilitate effective decision-making withing and amongst ASEAN bodies. In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat

The ASEAN Community, anchored on three community pillars: Political-Security Community, Economic Community, Socio-Cultural Community was launched in 2015. The ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together was introduced in 2015 as a Post-2015 Vision. It comprises the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, the ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint 2025, the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint 2025 and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025
