New York, USA, 26 September 2011

Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN, recently had a fruitful exchange of views with Mr Jose Miguel Insulza, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS). The two Secretaries-General met on the sideline of the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

They exchanged views on the developments and progress made in both regions. Dr Surin commended the achievements recorded by the OAS in addressing multi-dimensional security issues and promoting sustainable development in the American Continent, which can provide valuable experience and lessons learned for other regions.

On its part, ASEAN with its economic dynamism and its recognised role as the fulcrum of the evolving regional architecture in Asia-Pacific also can share its community-building experience with the OAS.

They agreed to further promote cooperation between the ASEAN Secretariat and the General Secretariat of the OAS by sustaining regular communications and dialogues, organising mutual visits when possible, and exploring areas for possible cooperation and collaboration between the two regional organisations.

Dr. Surin stressed that strengthening relations between ASEAN and other regional organisations, including the OAS, constitute ASEAN’s efforts in carrying out its outward-looking vision and engagement with the global community.
