The Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission Meeting took place today on the margins of the 56th AMM and Related Meetings in Jakarta. Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Kao Kim Hourn briefed the Commission on the progress of the implementation of the SEANWFZ Treaty Plan of Action (2023-2027). The Commission discussed the way forward on the accession of the Nuclear-Weapon States to the Protocol to the SEANWFZ Treaty and the proposal for collaboration between ASEAN and the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear-Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, among others.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat
