I wish to convey our heartfelt sympathy for the loss of lives, the displacement of families and the severe damages to agriculture as well as infrastructure in the Central, Southern and Northern Provinces of Lao PDR as a result of heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Son-Tinh between 18 – 19 Jul 2018 and the subsequent huge water overflow from Xepien Xenamnoyu dam. We stand in solidarity with the people of Lao PDR. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families.
I also wish to commend the Government of the Lao PDR for the immediate evacuation as well as search and rescue measures to alleviate the suffering of the people in the affected provinces.
Guided by the spirit of the ASEAN Declaration on One ASEAN One Response, the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA Centre) and the ASEAN Secretariat stands ready to support the Government and the people of Lao PDR in disaster response and humanitarian assistance efforts.
