Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Dr Surin Pitsuwan, met with all the Ambassadors of the EU in Jakarta last week following the successful conclusion of the 19th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) on 26-27 April 2012 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam. The meeting was held over breakfast at the residence of the German Ambassador to Indonesia and to ASEAN, H.E. Dr Norbert Baas.

Dr. Surin had a fruitful discussion and exchange of views with the EU Ambassadors about developments in ASEAN, the needs of ASEAN, and future developments in ASEAN-EU relations. Dr. Surin underlined the potential for further cooperation between ASEAN and the EU on economic and other mutually beneficial areas.
Dr. Surin also briefed the Ambassadors on the Global Movement of Moderates, which was initiated by Malaysia. “The Global Movement of Moderates will strive to promote peace and security. It will assemble moderates from around the world who share the value of an enduring and peaceful co-existence, and a common responsibility towards creating a better world for tomorrow, and for future generations. The Global Movement of Moderates is welcomed as it will address the negative perceptions and fears of Islam,” said Dr. Surin.
