ASEAN Member Countries have been following closely developments in Libya which have now entered a crucial and decisive transitional stage. Throughout the crisis, ASEAN Member Countries have consistently underscored the urgent need to protect and ensure the safety and security of civilians in Libya; emphasized that ultimately the crisis in Libya can only be resolved through a political process that enables the Libyan people to determine their own future; and that the international community, including the United Nations, must help create conditions conducive for the protection of civilians in Libya and the commencement of the said political process.

In this regard, ASEAN Member Countries support the on-going efforts involving the National Transitional Council to promote reconciliation and build a democratic and stable Libya in accordance with the aspirations and wishes of the Libyan people.
