The first Dedicated Ambassador of Brazil to ASEAN Presents Letter of Credence to the Secretary-General of ASEAN

Jakarta, 21 March 2024 – Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to ASEAN Henrique Archanjo Ferraro today presented his Letter of Credence (LOC) to Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr. Kao Kim Hourn at the ASEAN Headquarters.

Secretary-General Dr. Kao congratulated Ambassador Ferraro on his assumption of office and highlighted that the appointment of Ambassador Ferraro as the first dedicated Ambassador of Brazil to ASEAN demonstrates Brazil’s strong commitment to strengthening the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership. Going forward, Secretary-General Dr. Kao encouraged both sides to continue exploring possible cooperation in areas of mutual benefits and interests, in line with the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership: Practical Cooperation Areas (2024-2028), including in the areas of trade and investment, energy, food security, and science, technology and innovation.

Ambassador Ferraro reaffirmed the strategic importance of ASEAN for Brazil’s foreign policy. He reaffirmed Brazil’s support for ASEAN Centrality and commitment to advancing relations with ASEAN and ASEAN Member States, including through the frameworks of ASEAN-MERCOSUR and ASEAN-CELAC relations.

Brazil acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2012. In 2022, the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting conferred the status of the Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN to Brazil. The 2nd ASEAN-Brazil Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee (AB-JSCC) held on 14 December 2023 adopted the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership: Practical Cooperation Areas (2024-2028) which would serve as a practical guide to substantiate cooperation between the both sides.
