JAKARTA, 19 October 2016 — Turkey yesterday expressed its desire to work more closely with ASEAN and its Member States. This message was conveyed by the new Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to ASEAN, H.E. Mehmet Kadri Şander Gürbüz, during the presentation of his Letter of Credence to Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh, at the ASEAN Secretariat.

Secretary-General Minh congratulated Ambassador Gürbüz on his assumption of duty as Turkey’s Ambassador to ASEAN. He welcomed Turkey’s expressed interest in pursuing formal partnership with ASEAN and its ongoing efforts to enhance its engagement with ASEAN and ASEAN Member States. He suggested that Turkey explore cooperation in areas of mutual interest and benefits to substantiate its relations with ASEAN and individual ASEAN Member States.

Ambassador Gürbüz updated Secretary-General Minh on the recent developments in Turkey’s relations with ASEAN Member States. He informed that Turkey had established its embassies in nine ASEAN Member States and would open its embassy in the Lao PDR by end of this year. He also cited the current substantial two-way trade and development cooperation between Turkey and ASEAN Member States.
