H.E. Mark Canning, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to Indonesia said to Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, that his accreditation symbolised UK’s interest to deepen its engagement in the region. “The visit of the British Prime Minister David Cameron to Indonesia, the visit of the British Foreign Secretary William Hague to Singapore, and the UK’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) also reflect our wish to deepen our engagement with ASEAN and look forward to further explore cooperation between the two sides,” the Ambassador said.
In return, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan expressed his appreciation for the UK’s commitment and good intention to enhance cooperation with ASEAN. He encouraged Ambassador Canning to further explore the possibility of enhancing close cooperation in the field of civil society, infrastructure, technology, and food security in the region. Ambassador Canning also conveyed the possibility of providing English Language training in the region.
Dr. Surin and Ambassador Canning also discussed regional issues and exchanged views on ways to move forward ASEAN-UK and ASEAN-EU cooperation.
The discussions were occurred during the presentation of Letter of Credentials from Ambassador Canning to Dr. Surinat the ASEAN Secretariat today.
