ASEAN and Japan are pleased to announce the winners of the logo and catchphrase competition for the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation.The competition that was open to all citizens of ASEAN Member States and Japan to create a logo and catchphrase to describes the friendly relations between ASEAN and Japan.

The winner of the logo competition is You Ratanaksamrith, a 20-year-old Cambodian student. In the design (click here to see), the 10 yellow stripes represent ASEAN, while the red circle represents Japan. The position of the two is placed as if the sun is rising in the horizon. The outer curve around the red circle having two small hook shapes on the top is a sign of shaking hand, which symbolises cooperation and friendship. The flower-like shape means 40 years of peace between ASEAN and Japan. The two runners-up for the logo competition are two graphic designers from Japan, Kazuo Okuno and Sumihisa Manabe. Chosen among hundreds of entries, the catchphrase “Thoughts connected, future connected” created by designer Yoshiharu Sato from Japan is selected as the winner of the competition. The two runners-up are from ASEAN, You Ratanaksamrith, and Japan,Shusaku Sugata.

The winning logo and catchphrase were selected by the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN and Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN at the 5thMeeting of the ASEAN-Japan Joint Cooperation Committee on 6 November 2012 in Jakarta.

H.E. Kan Pharidh, Permanent Representative of Cambodia to ASEAN and Chair of the CPR 2012, said that the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation would be another milestone in the mature relationship between the two sides. He added that the peoples of ASEAN and Japan have also contributed to the deep rooted relations between the two sides. Cambodia is the ASEAN Country Coordinator for ASEAN-Japan Dialogue Relations.

Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN, H.E. Kimihiro ISHIKANE, appreciated that Japan and ASEAN have forged a robust and equal partnership for the past 40 years that has contributed significantly to the economic, social, and political development of the region. He said that Japan would continue to work closely with ASEAN in supporting ASEAN integration and narrowing the development gap in the region.

ASEAN and Japan’s cooperative partnership began in 1973 with the establishment of ASEAN-Japan Forum on Synthetic Rubber. Through years, ASEAN and Japan have forged close cooperation towards peace, stability, development and prosperity in Asia.The 40th anniversary in 2013will further strengthen the long-standing ASEAN-Japan partnership and cooperation.
