The delegation of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat paid a working visit to the ASEAN Secretariat earlier this week to exchange information on and experience in regional integration and  explore the possibility of forging closer relations between ASEAN and SADC.

Led by Eng. Mr. Joao Samuel Caholo, Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Cooperation of the SADC Secretariat and Dr. Christian Peters, GIZ Program Manager for SADC Capacity Development Advisor, the SADC Secretariat delegation was received by H.E. Nyan Lynn, Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC).

During the meeting with DSG Lynn, the SADC delegation was briefed on recent developments in ASEAN, particularly on its intensifying efforts to build the ASEAN Community by 2015 while expanding and deepening its relations with external parties, including individual countries and organisations in the African region.

The SADC delegation engaged in extensive discussions with senior staffs of the four departments of the ASEAN Secretariat, exchanging views and sharing experiences and best practice on developments in both regions. They also discussed lessons learned from ASEAN regional integration and Community building process as well as challenges faced by both sides in achieving their goals..

During their visit to Jakarta, the SADC delegation also visited offices of several ASEAN-related institutions, including the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA).
