JAKARTA, 27 June 2022 – Today, the ASEAN Gallery – based in the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) in Jakarta, Indonesia – received a new artwork from Vietnamese artist Pham Ha Ninh, the third resident artist for ASEAN Artists Residency Programme (AARP). The artwork named, “Mother Map” would be officially the 113th piece of the ASEAN Gallery collection. It was officially handed over to the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Corporate and Community Affairs (DSG CCA) Tran Duc Binh, witnessed by Paul Choong, Advisor to the President & CEO of Thai Beverage Public Company Limited (ThaiBev), representing the Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverages Corporation or SABECO, the sponsors of the programme.
In his opening remarks, DSG Binh mentioned that ‘’The resumption of the ASEAN Artists Residency Programme (AARP), an ASEAN Secretariat-driven flagship initiative, is to promote closer exchanges between regional art communities, using the ASEAN Gallery.’’ He thanked ThaiBev for their unswerving support in sustaining the ASEC art and culture outreach programme. ‘’Our partnership shows what public and private stakeholders can accomplish when they work together for the benefit of our community-building process,’’ he added.
‘’Mother Map’’ is the latest expansion to Ha Ninh’s periodical art series, which was made during his month-long residency at the ASEC in Jakarta.
Initiated in 2018, the AARP aims to nurture the region’s young and upcoming artists. The end-in-mind is for these artists to explore an ASEAN identity and deepen mutual understanding across diverse regional cultures. Through the programme, ASEC hopes to be able to play a role in developing the careers of young artists from the region.
Ha Ninh graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 2014 and earned his Master’s degree from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2018. His work has been featured on Hyperallergic, New American Paintings, and ArtandMarket among many other shows in New York, Singapore, and HCMC. He is currently an Associate Lecturer at RMIT University Vietnam.
