Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political-Security Community meets with SOM Leader of Australia in Sydney

DFAT’s Deputy Secretary of the Southeast Asian Group Michelle Chan met with ASEC's Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Political-Security Community Ms Dato Astanah Abdul Aziz for a bilateral during the ASEAN Australian Forum.

The meeting took place at the Shangri-La in Sydney on the 12 May 2026  

Australia and Indonesia cohosted the 38th ASEAN-Australia Forum (AAF) in Sydney to demonstrate commitment to the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and discuss opportunities for collaboration on shared regional and global challenges. 

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a intergovernmental organisation of eleven member states (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor-Leste). Established in 1967, it promotes economic growth, social progress, cultural development and regional peace by sponsoring initiatives that connect diverse communities through mutual interests, cultural exchanges, partnerships, dialogue platforms and other relevant efforts to build regional unity and shared identity.

Australia recognises ASEAN centrality as key to a peaceful, stable and prosperous region, where sovereignty is respected and all countries benefit from strategic balance.

The conference was held in Sydney between the 12th and 13th of May 2026.

Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Political-Security Community, Dato’ Astanah Abdul Aziz, today met with Australia’s SOM Leader, Michelle Chan, on the sidelines of the 38th ASEAN-Australia Forum in Sydney, Australia. Both sides took the opportunity to exchange views on the ASEAN-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), particularly in light of its 5th anniversary this year, as well as on regional and international issues of shared interest and concern.
