JAKARTA, 12 April 2018 – Senior Officials from ASEAN and New Zealand, meeting at the 25th ASEAN-New Zealand Dialogue in Jakarta yesterday, reaffirmed their strong ties and agreed to explore opportunities to further strengthen the strategic partnership.

The officials noted the good progress made in the Plan of Action to Implement the Joint Statement for ASEAN-New Zealand Strategic Partnership (2016-2020) which is now halfway through its implementation. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest and concern. New Zealand reaffirmed their continued support for ASEAN centrality and highlighted the importance of ASEAN unity in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

ASEAN welcomed New Zealand’s two key strategies, namely the People Strategy and Prosperity Strategy and appreciated New Zealand’s continued support towards ASEAN Community building efforts. In moving forward, both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in priority areas of mutual interest, including defence, cyber security, education, climate change, IUU fishing, trade facilitation, connectivity and disaster risk management, among others.

The dialogue was co-chaired by Jose Tavares, Director-General for ASEAN Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Indonesia and Ben King, Deputy Secretary, Asia and America Group, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand. It was attended by senior representatives from ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat.
