ASEAN pays tribute to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic medalists

JAKARTA, 3 December 2021 – ASEAN Secretariat hosted a hybrid event to honour and celebrate the achievements of ASEAN medalists and athletes of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.


“Sports have always brought people closer together and can help advance opportunities for inclusivity in the years ahead. As a forward-looking region, we should harness the power of sports in contributing to the socio-economic development across the region,” said Dato Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary-General of ASEAN in his opening remarks.


Representing the Chair of ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports, Eric Chua, Parliamentary Secretary of Singapore’s Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and Ministry of Social and Family Development said that, ‘’we have full faith and confidence in all ASEAN athletes and para-athletes, and will continue rooting for them in continued endeavour to make us, ASEAN, proud.”


ASEAN Member States dignitaries whom attended the Tribute to Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Medalists to hand the certificates to the medallists and athletes, included:


  • Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Brunei Darussalam’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports;
  • Sar Sokha, Secretary of State of Cambodia Ministry of Education Youth and Sport;
  • Khanthaly Siriphongphanh, Lao PDR’s Deputy Minister for Education and Sport;
  • Attorney Guillermo B. Iroy, Jr. Executive Director of Philippines Sports Commission;
  • Phipat Ratchakitprakan, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports; and
  • Le Thi Hoang Yen, Vice Chairman of Viet Nam Sports Administration.

Assistant Deputy Suyadi Pawiro of Indonesia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports; Assistant Secretary I Muhamad Asyraf Abdul Azias of Malaysia’ Ministry of Youth International Relations Division and Director Soe Soe Myar of Myanmar’s Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs also participated at the event.


In the concluding session of the event, Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines’ gold medallist in weightlifting, delivered a speech on behalf of all ASEAN Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic medallists and athletes. “This victory is an example of how perseverance and hard work can pay off. This victory is also reflective of how women are changing and asserting themselves to reach their full potential,” she said.

  

The tribute was held back to back with the “ASEAN We Score Campaign: Break Records, Make History!” talk show, a hybrid talk show with ten female sports ambassadors from ASEAN Member States.
