JAKARTA, 19 January 2018 –Secretary-General of ASEAN Dato Lim Jock Hoi received a glass artwork from Japanese artist Mieko Noguchi at the ASEAN Secretariat Gallery this morning.  Also present at this hand-over was Ambassador Kazuo Sunaga of the Mission of Japan to ASEAN who earlier on paid a courtesy call to Secretary-General Dato Lim to commemorate 45 years of friendship and cooperation between ASEAN and Japan.

The glass artwork was created by Mieko whose work has been exhibited in various parts of the world in the past 20 years.

Secretary-General Dato Lim said “this artwork does not only symbolise the strong ASEAN-Japan partnership but also enriches the art collection at the ASEAN Gallery. Appreciation for art from a different culture will also help strengthen the linkage between the peoples of ASEAN and Japan.”

According to Mieko, the masterpiece, entitled “10xm – Where are you?” shows how planet earth might look like from different distances, such as from the solar system, the Milky Way Galaxy or the deep universe. The differences in how the earth looks from various distances prompt the audience to question the origin of existence, “what is the world?” or “where do I stand?” which is apparently the inspiration for the artwork title.

ASEAN and Japan first established informal dialogue relations in 1973 and thus, commemorate 45 years of friendship and cooperation this year. The two sides cooperate in various sectors under the three pillars of the ASEAN Community. Japan is ASEAN’s fourth largest trading partner and the second largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) to ASEAN.

Ambassador Sunaga said, “It is my pleasure to see this artwork from Japan to be a part of art collection of the ASEAN Gallery on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of our friendship.  I appreciate a kind offer of donation from Ms. Noguchi and hope that many visitors will be charmed by beauty of the glass artwork.”
