JAKARTA, 27 October 2017 – The year 2017 marks a three-fold anniversary: 50 years of ASEAN, 40 years of ASEAN-EU relations and 30 years of ERASMUS+, the EU’s student mobility scheme. In this relation, the regional office of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Embassy Jakarta and the ASEAN Secretariat jointly organised “50 for 50” workshop on ASEAN higher education integration on 23-24 October at the ASEAN Secretariat. The workshop welcomed 50 distinguished academics and students from ASEAN.
The workshop aimed to give young ASEAN citizens a platform to make their voice heard on matters that are important to them and ASEAN’s future. During the workshop, the participants drew from their own experience abroad and shared how academic exchanges can improve quality and competitiveness within ASEAN and beyond.
In the end, students and young academics jointly drafted a paper on the role of higher education for ASEAN Vision 2025, and officially handed over the document to the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Education Chair representative, Mr. Mohd Hidayat Mohd Sauffi. The vision paper is the output of an extensive discussion covering topics such as the international environment, knowledge and skills for the future of ASEAN, student mobility, and the role of students for the ASEAN Community.
Among the key tangible recommendations are to develop a one-stop online portal which will ease the application process to study abroad, and to establish an ASEAN research council which will transform the ASEAN higher education space to be more advanced and inclusive. The vision paper will soon be published as the “Envisioning ASEAN: 50 Young ASEAN Scholars Share their Vision for the Region” booklet.
