ASEAN, Turkiye Explore Avenues for Enhanced Partnership

JAKARTA, 22 November 2024 – At the Sixth ASEAN-Türkiye Sectoral Cooperation Committee (AT-JSCC) Meeting at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat, ASEAN and Türkiye reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the ASEAN-Türkiye Sectoral Dialogue Partnership and explored opportunities for enhanced cooperation.


The Meeting highlighted the substantial progress made in implementing the ASEAN-Türkiye Practical Cooperation Areas (2024-2028) since its adoption last year. Both sides recognised the notable cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, science and technology, tourism, food and agriculture, disaster management, human resource development, education and people-to-people exchanges.


Looking ahead, ASEAN and Türkiye agreed to continue strengthening collaboration in areas of mutual interest as guided by the PCA (2024-2028), including combating transnational crime, cybersecurity, energy security, culture, disaster risk reduction, health, media and communications, and connectivity. Additionally, the Meeting discussed various areas of possible future cooperation activities such as mediation, artificial intelligence, sustainable finance, circular economy, green transition, and cultural heritage preservation.


During the Meeting, ASEAN encouraged Türkiye to support the forthcoming ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and its Strategic Plans while actively undertaking practical cooperation with ASEAN across the four identified key areas of cooperation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). ASEAN also encouraged Türkiye’s support for the implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 (MPAC) and the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan IV, as well as collaboration with ASEAN centres of excellence. In parallel, Türkiye reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening its partnership with ASEAN and ASEAN Member States in alignment with Türkiye’s Asia Anew Initiative.


The 6th AT-JSCC Meeting is co-chaired by, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs, Nararya S. Soeprapto, and Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to ASEAN, Prof. Dr. Talip Küçükcan,and attended by Members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN and their respective delegations. Representative from Timor-Leste attended as Observer.
