JAKARTA, 13 June 2018 – High-schooler Troy L. Valdehueza of the Philippines impressed judges with a video titled “We Belong” and came out as winner of the 4th ASEAN Youth Video Contest, with US$1,000 cash prize in tow.
Troy, a 19-year-old student of Central Mindanao University Laboratory Highschool, was followed by Malaysian Risjhen Rajasingam Velsine at the second place with a video titled “We Are More Alike Then We Unlike”(sic) . The third winner was Vietnamese Thi Nguyen Le Minh with the only animation video in the competition “In a Colorful ASEAN”.
Judges from US Mission to ASEAN, Education Youth and Sports Division ASEAN Secretariat, and ASEAN Foundation went through a rigorous selection process to name the winners. Nine young ASEAN filmmakers from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam were selected from 134 entries this year based on their initial 60-second video submission. In the last stage, they participated in a video production workshop in Singapore from 23 to 26 April 2018 to strengthen skills and produce their final two-minute videos with a theme: telling a story on how youth celebrate cultural diversity to promote peace and tolerance.
Designed to enhance youth leadership and civic engagement, the contest was open to all ASEAN citizens between 18 and 30 years old. It has been supported by the United States Government through ASEAN-U.S. PROGRESS project in partnership with the Education Youth and Sports Division of ASEAN Secretariat, the ASEAN Foundation and National Youth Council of Singapore.
