1. The Economic Ministers from the ten ASEAN Member States and Canada (“the Ministers”) met on 1 September 2018 in Singapore, for the Seventh ASEAN Economic Ministers Canada Consultations. The Consultations were co-chaired by H.E. Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Trade and Industry, Singapore and the Honourable James Gordon Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification, Canada.
2. The Ministers welcomed the expanding trade and investment ties between ASEAN and Canada, noting that total merchandise trade was nearly USD 18 billion in 2017, an increase of 10 per cent from the previous year. This ranked Canada as the ninth largest merchandise trading partner of ASEAN. Meanwhile, the stock of Canadian Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in ASEAN amounted to USD 9.4 billion in 2017.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. ASEAN organs always strive to achieve ASEAN’s goals and objectives, the Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat shall be functioned as coordinating Secretariat to help facilitate effective decision-making withing and amongst ASEAN bodies. In addition, each Member State shall appoint a Permanent Representative to liaise with Secretary-General of ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat
