Joint Media Statement of the Twenty First AEM – MOFCOM Consultation

  1. ASEAN Member States (AMS) and China met on 17 September 2022 for the Twenty First AEM – Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) Consultation. The Consultation was co-chaired by H.E. PAN Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, Kingdom of Cambodia, and H.E. Mr. Li Fei, Assistant Minister of Commerce of China.

  1. The Meeting noted that total merchandise trade between ASEAN and China reached USD 669 billion in 2021, registering an increase of 29 percent year-on-year showing gradual improvement after the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, China maintained its position as ASEAN’s largest trading partner. Foreign direct investment (FDI) flows from China to ASEAN amounted to USD 13.6 billion in 2021, almost double the USD 7.0 billion in 2020, and equivalent to 7.8 percent of total FDI flows to ASEAN.
