The Secretary-General of ASEAN has expressed his deepest condolences to the affected people of Bangladesh and India, especially to the families of those who have been killed or who are missing, in the wake of Cyclone Aila.
In separate letters addressed to the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, H.E. Dr Dipu Moni, and the Foreign Minister of India, H.E. S. M. Krishna, Dr Surin Pitsuwan said that he was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and damage to property caused by the Cyclone that hit the low-lying areas of both countries on 25 May 2009.
He said that he was confident that both countries would be able to cope successfully and efficiently with the effects of the natural calamity in view of their experience in handling disasters in the past.
The Secretary-General said that he would encourage ASEAN Member States to extend assistance in ways and means that they are prepared to.
