Two years after Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar, ASEAN is transferring the post-Nargis recovery coordination mechanism to the Government of Myanmar as it is completing its humanitarian operations in July 2010.
“Great achievements have been made after two years. However, the recovery process for Nargis survivors will continue for years to come. As part of its commitment to the Government of Myanmar in the post-Nargis operation, ASEAN is working with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement (MoSWRR), the government’s focal ministry for continuing the coordination after July 2010, to ensure continuity and sustainability of recovery efforts,” said Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN.
Dr Surin also highlighted the funding shortfalls in the shelters and livelihoods sectors and appealed for continued support for Nargis survivors. He said, “As estimated in the Post-Nargis Recovery and Preparedness Plan, livelihoods and shelters needs for 2009 are USD 158 million. However, only USD 63.5 million, or 40% of the requirements were met. I urge donors to continue their support to meet the needs ahead of the next monsoon season.”
In addition to the transfer of coordination function, ASEAN will support Myanmar on Disaster Risk Management to implement the Myanmar Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction (MAPDRR).
ASEAN also supports Myanmar in the development of a plan to generate sustainable livelihoods of Nargis-affected communities and the development of public-private partnerships.
